«The Advancing Human Rights initiative tracks the evolving state of global human rights funding. It is a collaboration between Candid and Human Rights Funders Network, in partnership with Ariadne and Prospera. Our aim is to strengthen funders’ decision-making, promote collaborations, and improve the effectiveness of human rights philanthropy.»

This marks the 20th annual resource tracking publication from Funders Concerned About AIDS (FCAA) on philanthropic support to address HIV and AIDS. The report relies on grants lists submitted directly by 72 funders (representing 92% of the total HIV-related philanthropic funding tracked by FCAA), as well as publicly sourced grants information from funder websites, grants databases, annual reports, U.S. Internal Revenue Service (IRS) Form 990 returns, and Candid’s Foundation Maps grants database (representing the remaining 8% of funding in the report). This report specifically captures HIV-related funding from philanthropic organizations around the world; it excludes any government funding to address HIV and AIDS, including domestic government, bilateral, and multilateral support.

The Sex Work Donor Collaborative (SWDC) organized a Discovery Journey for the 2023 Human Rights Funders Network Funding Futures Festival entitled “How intersectional grantmaking can support Sex Workers and other marginalized movements in shrinking civic space.” We hoped to offer an opportunity for funders to meet sex worker activist leaders and build more support for the effective intersectional movements we need. However, our session welcomed less than five people, including our facilitators. The energy across the convening was palpable, but there was little mention of sex worker rights outside this session. As a philanthropic community focused on the most marginalized movements, this was concerning. We believe these were some of the issues at play:
