Sex Worker Leadership in Grantmaking

1 July 2024

Dear Community Members, Partners and Allies,

In September 2023 our Co-Chairs wrote to you to announce Red Umbrella Fund’s plans for leadership transition. Today we write to announce that Sithulisile Moyo has begun her term as Coordinator.

Sithulisile Moyo is a sex workers’ rights activist, with extensive experience as a gender justice attorney in the global south region. A pan Africanist, social justice activist and legal reform lobbyist with over a decade of experience organising and learning from the social justice movements in a number of jurisdictions. Sithulisile’s biography is now included in our Secretariat overview.

As we hoped for, our recruitment prioritised recruitment from what is referred to as the Global South or Global Majority and ensuring the stability of the Fund. After serving as Interim Coordinator, Alexis Wilson Briggs will continue as Deputy Coordinator to supervise the grantmaking and accompaniment as well as support Sithulisile’s transition period.

Red Umbrella Fund continues to work to remain in alignment with the global sex worker rights movement, in all its vibrancy, and to continue to improve our innovative, activist-led and participatory model.

We appreciate the support that has been provided by our donors and to our host Mama Cash to enable Red Umbrella Fund to undertake this transformation and hope that these commitments will be renewed and strengthened as we work to secure funding for 2025 and beyond.

While there has been much progress, the worldwide political and financial threats facing sex workers are only intensifying and the need for more funding to build empowered, resilient, and active sex worker-led organisations and networks could not be more urgent. For individuals and institutions interested in showing their support, your donations are welcome (contact us here or donate directly through our website).

We welcome Sithulisile and and hope you will join us in warmly welcoming her to the team as Red Umbrella Fund moves into a new era.

In Solidarity,

Ankit Gupta & Denise Carr

Co-Chairs of the RUF International Steering Committee (ISC)
