Rapid Response Grants

Rapid Response Funding can be requested any time of the year in response to an urgent need, and is processed quickly. These can be Emergency Grants, requested to respond to an immediate life-threatening risk, or Opportunity Grants, used by a human rights defender or group to take advantage of a unexpected opportunity.

The Red Umbrella Fund does not provide emergency grants.

 Here are some organizations that do provide rapid response grants; please see the individual site for information about their funding criteria, geographic region, and application method.

GLOBAL

Frontline Defenders: Security Grants Program

  • Apply online with their secure application form in English for grants up to a maximum of €7,500.

EIDHR Small Grants for Human Rights Defenders

  • Apply online by e-mailing the EIDHR team for direct small grants of up to €10,000.

Freedom House Emergency Assistance Programs

  • Apply by email as a Human Rights Defender or as an LGBTI Activist; grant amounts are flexible.

Protect Defenders

  • Assistance for any non-EU human rights defender or organization to a maximum of €10,000.

AFRICA

Urgent Action Fund-Africa

  • For women’s organizations in Africa needing urgent protection up to a maximum USD $12,000.

UHAI EASHRI (East Africa)

  • Available to sex workers and sexual and gender minorities across Eastern Africa; flexible in amount and duration.

ASIA & THE PACIFIC

Urgent Action Fund: Rapid Response Program

  • Provides emergency and opportunity grants to women’s and trans* human rights defenders up to USD $5,000.

Forum Asia (South Asia, South East Asia & Northeast Asia)

  • For Human Rights Defenders in Asia who need urgent protection; to a maximum of USD $5,000.

EUROPE, CAUCASUS & CENTRAL ASIA

Urgent Action Fund: Rapid Response Program

  • Provides emergency and opportunity grants to women’s and trans* human rights defenders up to USD $5,000.

Emergency Support Fund for Key Populations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia

  • Managed by Aidsfonds and AFEW International, this funding programme provides emergency funding aimed to respond to threats to HIV service provision to key populations in Eastern Europe and Central Asia.  Eligible countries are: Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, the Russian Federation, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine or Uzbekistan. Grants can be up to €5.000,- only.

LATIN AMERICA & THE CARIBBEAN (SPANISH SPEAKING)

Urgent Action Fund-Latin America

  • Provides emergency and opportunity grants to Latin American human rights defenders up to USD $5,000.

NORTH AMERICA & THE CARRIBEAN (ENGLISH SPEAKING)

Urgent Action Fund: Rapid Response Program

  • Provides emergency and opportunity grants to women’s and trans human rights defenders up to USD $5,000.
Third Wave – Sex Worker Giving Circle: Mobilize Power Fund
  • deadline: 7 of April 2020.
  • Apply online via form in English or Spanish, or over the phone or by selfie video for grants up to $10,000 for individuals and $20,000 for organisations. Eligible country: USA
