Every year we share our list of grants including the names of the grantee-partner organisations that request to be published on our website. Organisations that wish to stay anonymous do not have their name or country publicly available. Please contact us if you would like to contact any of our former-grantees or discuss their work.

In 2022 Red Umbrella Fund’s PAC awarded €1,300,000 – our first time giving more than a million in a single year – bringing total grants to €7,886,500!

The network amplifies the voices of their sex worker members and advocates for the health and human rights of the diverse community of sex workers working and living in Africa. ASWA intends to use its grant to create a capacity scan to be used in modelling future trainings for sex worker-led organisations in 5 African countries. Alcondoms Cameroun Alcondoms Cameroun Country: Cameroon Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: French Alcondoms was established in 2012 in response to the harmful legal and policy environment for sex workers in Cameroon. This sex worker-led group promotes the human and labour rights of sex workers and works to increase sex workers’ access to HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment, STI and tuberculosis screening, and counselling services. Alcondoms is located in the outskirts of Douala and directly serves the high concentration of sex workers in the area, which are often not reached by other local and national service providers. Alcondoms Cameroun Alcondoms Cameroun Country: Cameroon Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: French This group provides health and HIV services to sex workers of all genders. Alcondoms organises workshops for law enforcement, health care providers and others to promote respect for sex workers’ rights, and to address stigma and violence. The Red Umbrella Fund grant will enable the group to develop advocacy material such as a documentary about the experiences of sex workers in Cameroon. Alianza Por El Trabajo Sexual Alianza Por El Trabajo Sexual Country: El Salvador Geographic scope of work: local Communication Language: Spanish Alianza por el trabajo sexual defines its role in El Salvador as “working actively in the action for the defense of the rights of women sex workers, through the unification of the sector.” With this first grant from Red Umbrella Fund, the organisation aims to organise a variety of events, trainings, meetings and campaigns in line with this work. In the country, sex work is technically legal but municipal authorities create administrative offences making sex work more isolated and dangerous. AMMAR Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina AMMAR Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: national Communication Language: Spanish AMMAR’s mission is to defend the human, social and labour rights of sex workers in Argentina. With a national reach of around 10,000 sex workers, the organisation is present in 14 provinces of the country through 18 branches in different locations all of which are run by sex workers. With this third grant from Red Umbrella Fund, the organisation aims to provide food, medication, legal services and to implement workshops and visibility activities during the women’s march and cover some of its core costs. AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: Local, Subnational Communication Language: Spanish This provincial level network of female and transgender sex workers combines community services tailored to the needs of sex workers (like a nursery, literacy courses, litigation) with political activism. They are a driving force behind a nation-wide campaign for the regulation of sex work in Argentina. Their sex worker friendly clinic provides comprehensive health services including condom distribution and HIV testing. AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: Local, Subnational Communication Language: Spanish This group of women sex workers functions as a labour union for sex workers in the province of Cordoba in Argentina. AMMAR Córdoba advocates for the labour rights of all sex workers by networking and lobbying with local authorities and other government departments. The group combines political activism with providing tailored services to different groups of sex workers ranging from social support and sex worker friendly health services to economic empowerment or artistic expression workshops. The group engages with academia and recently published a book on sex work in Argentina. Asociación de Mujeres ‘Las Golondrinas’ Asociación de Mujeres ‘Las Golondrinas’ Country: Nicaragua Geographic scope of work: Local Communication Language: Spanish Founded in 2004, this organisation works with 12 local groups of female and trans sex workers in different municipalities in central and northern Nicaragua. The group uses mass media to promote labour rights of sex workers and address stigma and discrimination. The Red Umbrella Fund grant will contribute to core costs of the organisation and enable it to conduct trainings on sexual health and human rights for sex workers, and launch a campaign to end violence against sex workers. With nearly 25 years of experience, the network has a strong presence in the sex work community and relatively high visibility among the general public. With this grant the network will hold an international convening of sex worker-led labour unions. The group carries out sensitisation campaigns in coordination with other sex worker groups in Latin America. UNES organises regular meetings with municipal authorities, health service providers, and local police to promote the wellbeing and rights of sex workers in Paraguay where sex work is not recognised as work. The group defends and promotes sex workers’ human rights and aims to create choices and tools which allow sex workers to achieve a better quality of life, and to empower women sex workers in the country. ASMUBULI builds capacity of sex workers in advocacy, governance, democracy, gender, and human rights and supports projects that improves sex workers’ access to health, education, housing, and legal services. The group strategically builds partnerships and conducts national level advocacy, and is building a national sex worker union. At the international level, ASMUBULI works with the regional sex worker network RedTraSex. Association New Way+ Association New Way+ Country: Cameroon Geographic scope of work: Local Communication Language: French This organisation is run by and for sex workers on the outskirts of Douala, Cameroon. Association New Way+ works to increase access to quality health care, including HIV services, for women sex workers. Working primarily at the local level, New Way+ works to mobilise sex workers to stand up against stigma and discrimination and provides information, condoms, HIV services, and referrals. Bar Hostess Empowerment & Support Programme (BHESP) Bar Hostess Empowerment & Support Programme (BHESP) Country: Kenya Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: English This Kenyan national sex worker-led organisation was created in 1998. BHESP runs three community-led clinics providing free and comprehensive health and legal services to sex workers. The group successfully reaches street sex workers who are considered particularly vulnerable. This organisation identifies county laws oppressing sex workers across Kenya and repeals them through legal actions, demonstrations, media campaigns and petitions. BHESP works closely with other sex worker groups in the country and region. The coalition unites sex workers of all genders and gives visibility to sex workers’ struggles against police violence and for the protection of their human rights. The coalition advocates for the labour rights of sex workers and local and national level and aims to create a labour union for sex workers. Davida Davida Country: Brazil Geographic scope of work: Local Communication Language: English This organisation focuses on HIV/AIDS prevention and improving the legal status and labour conditions of sex workers in the country. A draft bill to decriminalise and regulate sex work has been named in honour of the founder of the organisation, the late Gabriela Leite. In 2005, Davida launched the fashion line Daspu, which serves as an income-generating activity and also an advocacy strategy. Davida’s magazine, Beiji da Rua, reaches thousands of sex workers, allies and decision makers around the country. HODSAS supports its members in managing their health. With this grant, HODSAS will organise trainings on sexual health and rights, distribute sanitary pads and organise radio shows on sexual health and rights and family planning in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Kenya Sex Workers Alliance (KESWA) Kenya Sex Workers Alliance (KESWA) Country: Kenya Geographic scope of work: National Communication Language: English This national network of sex workers works with and connects 35 sex worker-led organisations in Kenya to improve their skills and knowledge on topics such as organisational development, fundraising and human rights policy advocacy. KESWA organises campaigns to influence law and policy makers at national level to decriminalise sex work and improve living and working conditions for sex workers and end the high levels of violence against sex workers. Legalife Ukraine Legalife Ukraine Country: Ukraine Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: Russian Formerly known as Legalife Kirovograd Branch, this organisation mobilises sex workers and allies in different parts of the country with the aim to protect and promote sex workers’ health and human rights. Legalife Ukraine works to end gender-based violence, organises self-support groups of sex workers, and provides free legal support to sex workers through a free hotline (phone line). The group works to improve sex workers’ access to sexual and reproductive health services, including HIV prevention, testing and treatment services. Legalife works at local and national levels and is well connected internationally. Maggie’s Toronto Sex Workers Action Project Maggie’s Toronto Sex Workers Action Project Country: Canada Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: English This organisation supports sex workers in Toronto to live and work in safety and with dignity through education on safer sex and drug use. Maggie’s provides drop-in spaces, counselling and referrals to health and social services. The Red Umbrella Fund grant supports its efforts to reach out particularly to and address the needs and rights of sex workers from indigenous communities through hosting dedicated drumming groups and talking circles. The group includes sex workers living with HIV and people who use drugs and the majority of its more than 300 members are illiterate. MSS works to build sex workers’ understanding of human rights. The group is connected to other sex worker groups and allies and reaches out to the local government to end stigma and violence against sex workers and increase the recognition of sex work as work among service providers and government.
