In the 10 years since our launch in 2012, Red Umbrella Fund has given 279 grants to 180 organisations in 68 countries. Every year we share our list of grants including the names of the grantee-partner organisations that request to be published on our website. Organisations that wish to stay anonymous do not have their name or country publicly available. Please contact us if you would like to contact any of our former-grantees or discuss their work.

In 2022 Red Umbrella Fund’s PAC awarded €1,300,000 – our first time giving more than a million in a single year – bringing total grants to €7,886,500!

African Sex Worker Alliance (ASWA) African Sex Worker Alliance (ASWA) Country: Regional Network - Kenya Based Geographic scope of work: International Communication Language: English This sex worker-led African regional network was created in 2009 and is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The Africa Sex Worker Alliance (ASWA) has more than 70 sex worker-led organisations as members in 33 African countries. The network amplifies the voices of their sex worker members and advocates for the health and human rights of the diverse community of sex workers working and living in Africa. ASWA intends to use its grant to create a capacity scan to be used in modelling future trainings for sex worker-led organisations in 5 African countries. Alianza Por El Trabajo Sexual Alianza Por El Trabajo Sexual Country: El Salvador Geographic scope of work: local Communication Language: Spanish Alianza por el trabajo sexual defines its role in El Salvador as “working actively in the action for the defense of the rights of women sex workers, through the unification of the sector.” With this first grant from Red Umbrella Fund, the organisation aims to organise a variety of events, trainings, meetings and campaigns in line with this work. In the country, sex work is technically legal but municipal authorities create administrative offences making sex work more isolated and dangerous. AMMAR Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina AMMAR Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: national Communication Language: Spanish AMMAR’s mission is to defend the human, social and labour rights of sex workers in Argentina. With a national reach of around 10,000 sex workers, the organisation is present in 14 provinces of the country through 18 branches in different locations all of which are run by sex workers. With this third grant from Red Umbrella Fund, the organisation aims to provide food, medication, legal services and to implement workshops and visibility activities during the women’s march and cover some of its core costs. AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) AMMAR Córdoba (Associación de Mujeres Meretrices de Argentina delegación Córdoba) Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: Local, Subnational Communication Language: Spanish This provincial level network of female and transgender sex workers combines community services tailored to the needs of sex workers (like a nursery, literacy courses, litigation) with political activism. They are a driving force behind a nation-wide campaign for the regulation of sex work in Argentina. Their sex worker friendly clinic provides comprehensive health services including condom distribution and HIV testing. Asociación Civil CAMBIO Y ACCION Asociación Civil CAMBIO Y ACCION Country: Peru Geographic scope of work: Local, Subnational, National Communication Language: Spanish Working mainly with men sex workers, Asociación Civil Cambio y Accion aims to eradicate violence, stigma and discrimination and achieve the recognition of sex work as work. Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina (AMMAR) Asociación de Mujeres Meretrices de la República Argentina (AMMAR) Country: Argentina Geographic scope of work: National Communication Language: Spanish This network advocates at national level and through its provincial branches for the human rights of sex workers in Argentina. With nearly 25 years of experience, the network has a strong presence in the sex work community and relatively high visibility among the general public. AMMAR was a founding member of RedTraSex, the Latin American and Caribbean Female Sex Workers Network. With this grant the network will hold an international convening of sex worker-led labour unions. The organisation fights for the respect of sex workers’ human and labour rights in the Dominican Republic. With this grant, the organisation aims to train and support young activists, strengthen its organisation and organise discussions on trade unions and labour rights. Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Buscando Libertad (ASMUBULI) Asociación Nacional de Mujeres Buscando Libertad (ASMUBULI) Country: Colombia Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: Spanish ASMUBULI unites women sex workers in Colombia in their struggle against injustice, inequality and discrimination, and actively contributes to the building of a national sex worker union. The group defends and promotes sex workers’ human rights and aims to create choices and tools that allow sex workers to achieve a better quality of life. ASMUBULI builds the capacity of sex workers in advocacy, governance, democracy, gender and human rights, and implements projects that improve sex workers’ access to health, education, housing and legal services. The group strategically builds partnerships to conduct more effective advocacy at the national level. In response to a recent law on mandatory registration for sex workers, the group is supporting migrant sex workers in Germany who are most affected by the change. Coalicion de Organizaciones de Trabajadoras y Trabajadores Sexuales de Quito (La Calle en DisPuta) Coalicion de Organizaciones de Trabajadoras y Trabajadores Sexuales de Quito (La Calle en DisPuta) Country: Ecuador Geographic scope of work: Local, National, International Communication Language: Spanish Known also as La Calle en DisPuta, this new strategic coalition joins together four sex worker organisations that have existed for many years in Quito. The coalition unites sex workers of all genders and gives visibility to sex workers’ struggles against police violence and for the protection of their human rights. The coalition advocates for the labour rights of sex workers and local and national level and aims to create a labour union for sex workers. At regional level, La Calle en DisPuta is connected to the Plataforma Latinoamericana de Personas que Ejercen Trabajo Sexual (PLAPERTS). Petubuhan Advokasi Masayrakat Terpinggir (PAMT) Petubuhan Advokasi Masayrakat Terpinggir (PAMT) Country: Malaysia Geographic scope of work: Local, Subnational, National Communication Language: English Established in 2011, this organisation supports sex workers’ access to health care through peer education, condom distribution and referrals to health and social services. The group supports sex workers in setting up their own support groups, and aims to improve the living and working conditions of sex workers in the country. With the Red Umbrella Fund grant, PAMT will set up a crisis response team to support sex workers who face violence, exploitation, and arrest. Plataforma Latinoamericana de Personas que Ejercen Trabajo Sexual (PLAPERTS) Plataforma Latinoamericana de Personas que Ejercen Trabajo Sexual (PLAPERTS) Country: Regional Network - Ecuador Based Geographic scope of work: Subnational, National, International Communication Language: Spanish This regional network, created in 2013 and based in Ecuador, unites 28 member organisations of sex workers of all genders in seven countries of Latin America. PLAPERTS offers trainings to its members to develop strategies and conduct political advocacy for the recognition of the labour and other human rights of sex workers. PLAPERTS reinforces local leadership and shares tools among its members to denounce the violations of sex workers’ rights in the challenging context of rising conservatism and violence in Latin America. As a regional network, PLAPERTS unites sex worker-led organisations working with sex workers of all genders in 11 Latin American countries. Formed in Peru in 2013, the regional network is now based in Ecuador. The network is a space to share information and provides capacity building to its members as well as advocates for the fulfilment of sex workers’ human rights. With this grant, the network will implement a virtual training on social protection and carry out campaigns demystifying sex work and promoting the recognition of sex work as work in the Latin American context. PROUD PROUD Country: Netherlands Geographic scope of work: Local, National Communication Language: English This recently created union works with sex workers from different sectors of the sex industry in the Netherlands to oppose criminalisation, stigma and discrimination against sex workers and improve their working conditions. PROUD builds capacity and leadership of sex workers of all genders and provides direct support and referrals, documents cases of human rights violations, reaches out to media, and advocates for the rights of sex workers in national and local legislation and policies. Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement (SWARM) Sex Worker Advocacy and Resistance Movement (SWARM) Country: United Kingdom Geographic scope of work: National Communication Language: English This workers’ cooperative aims to strengthen the sex workers’ rights movement through organising community workshops and festivals, networking and collaboration. SWARM advocates for full decriminalisation of sex work through lobbying parliamentarians, amplifying sex workers’ voices in public debates, and speaking out in media. The cooperative actively campaigns against the recent rise in arrests, unlimited detention, and deportation of migrant sex workers in the UK who are being specifically targeted since the Brexit vote. Sex Workers Intersectional Peer Education (SWIPE) Sex Workers Intersectional Peer Education (SWIPE) Country: Italy Geographic scope of work: national Communication Language: English SWIPE was born in October 2020 to fill the need for an association that could work on a national level, for all sex workers and that could act as a public face at a country level. SWIPE (Sex worker Intersectional Peer Education) is a sex workers and allies association, created to support Italian sex workers’ rights, promote an inclusive culture and fight stigma, whorephobia and whorearchy. With this first grant from Red Umbrella Fund, the organisation aims to organise workshops, a podcast, manage its website and social media platforms and continue strengthening its structures. Together in Service (SWOPLA) Together in Service (SWOPLA) Country: United States Geographic scope of work: local Communication Language: English SWOPLA (Sex Worker Outreach Project Los Angeles) is a grassroots non-profit organisation that is led, organised and supported by and for sex workers. SWOPLA’s vision is to usher in the reality where all sex workers? labor and body are valued and respected. Amongst other important work, SWOPLA maintains a resource list on its website and cultivates relationships with service providers to provide referrals useful to sex workers in the Los Angeles area of the United States of America.
