\u00a0\u201cFrom community outreach to political action, the group has made great strides in empowering sex workers and decreasing violence against them.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Sex workers in Brazil face high levels of stigma, systematic violence and abuse from the police. However, the group has developed a successful relationship with the military police of Minas Gerais which has resulted in a significant decrease in violence against sex workers in the area. This case study (the second in a series of three) is about APROSMIG (Associa\u00e7\u00e3o das Prostitutas de Minas Gerais<\/em>), a sex worker-led group in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.<\/p>\n

\u201cAPROSMIG provides legal counselling, promoting access to social benefits, and training participants to deal with situations such as arrest and violence from the police and clients. They have worked with the urbanisation company URBEL to include older sex workers in the social housing system. In workshops on entrepreneurship sex workers learn how to open\u00a0 a business bank account and use debit and credit machines, which are much safer and help to avoid situations of violence with clients.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

APROSMIG has empowered sex workers through educational and cultural initiatives. The group provided English language classes for sex workers and developed a reference book (\u201cPuta Livro\u201d) for international clients during big international events in the country. APROSMIG organised marches and Daspu (from the whores) and Puta Dei events, demonstrating their pride and successful community building.<\/p>\n

The Red Umbrella Fund was the group\u2019s first international and institutional funder.<\/p>\n

APROSMIG: Um estudo de caso<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00ab\u00a0Da a\u00e7\u00e3o comunit\u00e1ria \u00e0 a\u00e7\u00e3o pol\u00edtica, o grupo fez grandes avan\u00e7os na capacita\u00e7\u00e3o das profissionais do sexo e diminui\u00e7\u00e3o da viol\u00eancia contra elas\u00a0\u00bb.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

As profissionais do sexo, no Brasil, enfrentam altos n\u00edveis de estigma, viol\u00eancia sistem\u00e1tica e abuso da pol\u00edcia. Contudo, o grupo desenvolveu um rela\u00e7\u00e3o bem sucedida com a pol\u00edcia militar de Minas Gerais, o que resultou em uma diminui\u00e7\u00e3o significativa na viol\u00eancia contra as profissionais do sexo na \u00e1rea. Este estudo de caso (o segundo de uma s\u00e9rie de tr\u00eas) \u00e9 sobre APROSMIG (Associa\u00e7\u00e3o das Prostitutas de Minas Gerais), um grupo de profissionais do sexo de Belo Horizonte, Brasil.<\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cA APROSMIG oferece consultoria jur\u00eddica, promovendo o acesso a benef\u00edcios sociais e capacitando as participantes a lidarem com situa\u00e7\u00f5es tais como pris\u00e3o ou viol\u00eancia cometida por policiais ou clientes. O grupo trabalhou com a empresa de urbaniza\u00e7\u00e3o URBEL para incluir profissionais do sexo mais velhas no seu sistema de habita\u00e7\u00e3o social. Workshops sobre empreendedorismo ensinam as profissionais do sexo a abrirem uma conta banc\u00e1ria comercial e como usar m\u00e1quinas de cart\u00e3o de cr\u00e9dito e d\u00e9bito, que s\u00e3o muito mais seguras do que dinheiro vivo e ajudam a evitar situa\u00e7\u00f5es de viol\u00eancia com clientes.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

APROSMIG capacitou profissionais do sexo atrav\u00e9s de iniciativas educacionais e culturais. O grupo ofereceu aulas de ingl\u00eas para profissionais do sexo e desenvolveu um livro de refer\u00eancia (\u00ab\u00a0Puta Livro\u00a0\u00bb) para clientes internacionais durante grandes eventos internacionais no pa\u00eds. APROSMIG organizou marchas e os eventos Daspu e Puta Dei, demonstrando orgulho e empoderamento da comunidade.<\/p>\n

O Red Umbrella Fund foi o primeiro financiador internacional e institucional do grupo.<\/p>\n
